The Concert Bands
The Pensacola High Band Programs consist of 2 concert bands. Both groups participate in The Florida Bandmasters association Music Performance Assessment festivals in March. Students who perform in these ensembles must participate in The Fighting Tiger Marching Band (unless waived by the director - contact the director for more information). Students who participate in the concert bands are eligible to participate in All-County Band, Solo and Ensemble, Jazz Band, All-State, State Solo and Ensemble, and All-State Band. Both bands present a Winter Concert and Spring Concert in addition to the MPA performance in March.
*Students can be eligible to enroll in more than one band and can learn a new instrument.
Beginning Band (1st year players)
Through the charitable grant from Pensacola's IMPACT 100, the Pensacola High School Band program has received a grant of $100,300 to initiate a beginning band to allow all students at PHS to have a music education. This band is open to all students and is free of cost for PHS students to participate (Students may be charged if instruments are lost, damaged, etc.) Students will learn how to read music, good fundamentals, proper tone production, and more. This ensemble will produce 2-3 concerts per school year. Students will have access to high quality instruments.
Instruments available to learn: Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, French Horn, Trumpet, Bassoon, Trombone, Tuba, Euphonium, and Percussion.
Concert Band (Junior Varsity Band)
The Concert Band is open to all students who play a band instrument. This ensemble is for students developing fundamentals, tone, technique, and overall band sound achievement. New band members will be placed in this ensemble by default unless they show strong skills on their instruments. Auditions will be held throughout the year for placement. Incoming freshman who wish to be in the top symphonic band should be prepared to audition with 12 major scales, chromatic scale, and sight reading.
Symphonic Band (Varsity Band)
The Symphonic Band is the top wind ensemble (varsity). This group contains students who have shown adequate skills in order to play mature literature at a high level. This is an auditioned group as students must possess strong abilities in the following: sight reading, proper tone production, 12 major scales, technique, and positive attitude. Students in this group must audition for the All-County Band and are highly encouraged to participate in solo & ensemble festival. Auditions will be held throughout the year for placement.
