Q: Can I play sports and be in band at the same time?
A: Yes! Not only do we encourage you to be in band, we also encourage you to participate in school sports and to try new things that PHS has to offer. We typically have students who participate in swim, softball, volleyball, track, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, football, cheer, and more.

Q: I am going to be in the IB program. People say that it is too much to be in Band (or do other things) while also in IB. Is that true?
A: The answer is... yes and no. IB students need to possess great time management in order to be successful in the program. That means putting your work before leisure (phone, games, computer, etc.). If you are accepted into the IB program that means that you have the ability to possess or attain great time management. If you enjoy playing your instrument and like band then joining band is for you. In fact, balance is one of the official values of the IB organization in addition to Music being a facet and option of the IB curriculum. Currently, around 52% of band students are also IB students. IB students who are also in band are very well rounded and often go to great colleges and get great scholarships. In recent years IB Band students have gone on to the following colleges and universities: Boston College, The University of Florida, Florida State University, The University of Utah, Trinity College, Bethune-Cookman University, MIT, Georgia Tech, The University of California Berkeley, as well as high paying scholarships to The University of West Florida.
Q: I am concerned about travel time and after school rehearsals.
A: Travel time may be a concern because our students live all over the county and even into Santa Rosa county (think Gulf Breeze, Milton, Pace, Perdido). Many of our students sacrifice their time in order to get to and from school. The principal of time management comes to play here. The more you focus on getting ahead on your work will cause you to worry less on falling behind.

Q: I don't own my own instrument (euphonium, tuba, flute, trumpet, oboe, bassoon, etc.) Does the school have one I can borrow?
A: Yes, The Band has an inventory that allows us to accommodate ALL of the instruments needed such as bassoon, oboe, euphonium, tuba, trumpet, flute. We have pretty much all of the band instruments on hand available for loan. The PHS Band instrument inventory features high quality instruments that are well maintained.

Q: I want to be in band but I'm unsure or unable to march. Is that okay?
A: Yes and no. All students who are medically or physically unable to march are excused of all marching activities. Students who are physically able should march unless they do an official PHS fall sport. Marching band is only 3 months out of the 10 month school year. For a vast majority of students marching band becomes their favorite activity and it is something they and we all look forward to. If you like band now your will LOVE marching band later. Students who are seeking waivers for band should contact the director.

Q: I plan to do band but I also plan to do a fall sport such as Swim, Volleyball, Cheer, or Football. Do I have to march in the halftime show?
A: NOPE! This is called being on the Fall Sports Waiver. It means that the sports above coincide with the fall marching band program. That means you do not have to be in the halftime show. Though fall sports students can be waived from the marching show, they often still participate in the halftime show because they like band. Students on the fall waiver still come to games to play in the stands when it doesn't interfere with the fall sport as well as participate in parades and functions.

Q: I'm not sure if I want to do band anymore after middle school.
A: That's a common thought of 8th grade band students and definitely a valid one for that matter. However, high school is very different from middle school and the same goes for the bands. High School band has a lot more regular performances, more travel, has more freedom, and is very student led and governed. Also, after all of the time and money that you have put in to band wouldn't it be worth it to try one more semester? I always ask for students to try one semester of band and if it's not a good fit then a schedule change is more than easy to take care of. Last, how would you know if you liked ice cream or not if you have never tried it? Same goes for band!
